Abstract

The shift from face-to-face classes to online learning has highlighted concerns regarding the attention span of students. This study identified the factors affecting the attention span of the Grades 11 and 12 students of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute in online synchronous video conference classes and determined their average attention spans. For each year level, 120 respondents answered a combination of self-made and adapted questionnaires, which contained questions identifying their attention span and its factors in terms of distractions, student interest, and learning preferences. The gathered data revealed that the average attention span of the students was between 30 to 60 minutes and that there was no significant difference between the attention span of the Grade 11 and Grade 12 students. Furthermore, the most common distractions were background noise, scrolling through social media, requirements from other subjects, inadequate amount of sleep, personal devices, and hunger. Subject interest and the essentiality of a course to their future career, on the other hand, were the most common determining factors of student interest. As for learning preferences, the most significant factors for the attention and motivation of students were the communication skills, teaching style, and enthusiasm of the lecturer.
