Temporo-spatial and kinematic variables in the context of rehabilitation following treadmill walking

Abstract

Treadmill training is frequently used as a rehabilitation tool for patients with stroke. The current chapter will provide a summary of treadmill walking as a rehabilitation tool and assess the kinematic and temporo-spatial differences between treadmill and overground walking. The implications of these differences will be discussed in the context of stroke patient rehabilitation following treadmill training. Additionally, current research using split-belt treadmills and robot gait orthoses to restore temporo-spatial and kinematic parameters will be summarised and discussed as an option for gait rehabilitation. © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
