Abstract

Drinking fountains are common resources for water inside the campus. The question is, is it really safe to drink water from it? This study was done to evaluate the water safety and quality of water from drinking fountains in a highly recognized educational institution in Region 4A. According to the institution’s school clinic, acute gastroenteritis is one of the leading causes of consultation due to intake of contaminated water or food this school year (2019-2020). Water fountains may be the probable location of harboring contaminated water due to the lack of maintenance and the location of the water fountains. In order to determine the drinking water’s safety for consumption, the physical, chemical and microbiological properties of water will be investigated in this study. There twenty-five (25) water fountains wherein one water sample each will be tested for water quality testing. A total of twenty-five (25) water samples will be tested for its physical properties (turbidity, color, temperature), chemical properties (pH, water hardness, salinity) and microbiological properties (Standard Plate Count, enumeration of Coliforms, detection of E.coli) based on guidelines set by World Health Organization. The samples will be sent to an accredited Water Analysis Laboratory (PrimeWater in conjunction with Dasmariñas Water District) for the experimental procedure. This study will use quantitative data analysis through descriptive statistics for the interpretation and discussion of results.
