Abstract

This study used the descriptive method of research. A total of 305 respondents were selected using the Slovin’s formula with .05 margin of error and they were selected using simple random sampling. A self-made questionnaire was used to measure the level of awareness and practices of the respondents in the prevention of prostate cancer. Frequency, percentage, random sample and mean were the statistical tools used in the study. In the light of the findings made through the analysis and evaluation of the data obtained, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) Majority of the respondents belonged to the 18-28 years old bracket, single and attained college level; (2) The level of awareness of the respondents in the prevention of prostate cancer was poorly aware; (3) The practice of the respondents in the prevention of prostate cancer overall is average, which means that sometimes they do the appropriate things in preventing prostate cancer; (4) There is a significant difference in the level of awareness of the respondents in the prevention of prostate cancer when they are grouped according to age because the younger group have higher level of awareness in preventing prostate cancer. In terms of civil status, single respondents have higher level of awareness in preventing prostate cancer. In terms educational attainment, college level of education has higher level of awareness in preventing prostate cancer; (5) There is no significant difference in the level of awareness of the respondents in the prevention of prostate cancer when the respondents are grouped according to age because the three (3) age groups have the same level of practices in preventing prostate cancer. In terms of civil status, married, single and widowed respondents have the same level of practices in prevention of prostate cancer. In terms of educational attainment, different levels of education have the same level of practices in preventing prostate cancer; (6) There is sufficient evidence to conclude that there is a significant relationship to a great extent between awareness and practices in the prevention of prostate cancer based on the computed t-value for the correlation coefficient of 7.69 which was greater than the critical value of 1.96 at 0.05 level of significance using 303 as degrees of freedom. This indicated that the respondents with high level of awareness in preventing prostate cancer also have high level of practices in the prevention of prostate cancer.
