Abstract

This study employed the documentary survey method of research involving 378 residents of Sta. Fe Dasmarinas, Cavite as respondents and they were selected using stratified sampling technique. Slovin’s formula was used in gathering data. A modified adapted questionnaire was used based on the thesis entitled “Level of knowledge of Chain Smokers in Having Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease” by Dimapilis et al. (2005). Statistical tools used to analyze the data were frequency, percentage and mean. The following conclusions were obtained, based on the findings of the study: (1) Majority of the selected residents of Sta. Fe, Dasmarinas, Cavite are 21-40 years old, male, single, belong in the income group of P10,000 and below, and obtained high school level of education; (2) Eighty-five percent 85% of the respondents are aware of the meaning of COPD, 70% are aware of the signs and symptoms of COPD and 66% are aware of the disease condition that COPD may lead to. However, only 8% of the respondents are aware of the characteristics of the sputum of COPD patients, 14% are aware of how the chest of COPD patients looks like and 24% are aware of what happens to the breathing of the COPD patients; (3) Majority of the selected respondents of Sta. Fe, Dasmarinas, Cavite have average level of awareness regarding COPD; (4) The level of awareness of the selected residents of Sta. Fe, Dasmarinas, Cavite regarding COPD has no significant difference when grouped by age. Respondents from different age groups have the same level of awareness regarding COPD; (5) The level of awareness of the selected residents of Sta. Fe, Dasmarinas, Cavite regarding COPD has no significant difference when grouped by gender. Male and female respondents have the same level of awareness regarding COPD; (6) The level of awareness of the selected residents of Sta. Fe, Dasmarinas, Cavite regarding COPD has no significant difference when grouped by civil status. Single and married respondents have the same level of awareness regarding COPD; (7) The level of awareness of the selected residents of Sta. Fe, Dasmarinas, Cavite regarding COPD has no significant difference when grouped by monthly income. Respondents from different income groups have the same level of awareness regarding COPD; (8) The level of awareness of the selected residents of Sta. Fe, Dasmarinas, Cavite regarding COPD has a significant difference when grouped by educational attainment. Respondents who obtained college level of education have higher level of awareness regarding COPD than respondents with vocational, secondary and elementary level of education.
