Abstract

The study assesses the factors and barriers that affect the level of medication adherence of patients with hypertension in Dasmariñas, Cavite. A community-based cross-sectional study was employed by the researchers in conducting the study. The research utilized the Medication Adherence Report Scale 10 (MARS-10) and Adherence Barrier Questionnaire (ABQ) in assessing the level of medication adherence and determining the barriers affecting level of medication adherence. The data gathering was conducted on adult hypertensive patients visiting independent community pharmacies in Dasmariñas, Cavite. Majority of the 262 responses obtained through convenience sampling were female (58.8%), aged 50-59 years old (52.3%), have finished secondary education (59%), are employed (62.6%), have an annual income of below Php 60,000 (67.6%), and a duration of diagnosis of one to five years (42.4%). It was observed that the majority of the respondents had a high level of medication adherence (54.2%) with the main barrier being medication-related (29.8%). Moreover, employment status, income, and duration of diagnosis has a significant relationship with the level of medication adherence, meanwhile educational attainment displayed a significant relationship with both the level of medication adherence and the barriers. There was no significant relationship observed between the level of medication adherence and the determined barriers.
