Abstract

The researchers utilized a quasi-experimental research design on the effectiveness of young duhat and sampaguita leaves as a decoction in the treatment of scabies. The respondents of this study came from Barangay Fatima I DBB-C, Dasmariñas, Cavite, which consisted of 20 children that were all inflicted with scabies and underwent treatment of young duhat and sampaguita leaves decoction. The research instrument used was an observation tool developed by Dumaraos et. al. (1995) which was modified. Mean and f- test were the main statistical treatments used to investigate the hypothesis and association between variables. The findings were as follows: 1) Subjects treated with young duhat leaves gave a mean of 9.7 described as moderate to fair effectiveness. The healing process of the same respondents had a mean of 4.87 described as partial wound healing; 2) In the use of sampaguita leaves, a mean of 10.55 was fair in effectiveness, while in healing process the mean of 5.44 described as partial wound healing on some areas of wound. Both duhat and sampaguita leaves gave similar effectiveness; and 3) The significant difference at 1% level of significance was in favor of the use of young duhat leaves which very slight for both healing process and duration of treatment. The following conclusions were drawn: 1) Because duhat leaves contained tannin and volatile oil that has an astringent effect for homeostasis and vasoconstriction, it was slightly effective than sampaguita leaves in terms of healing process and duration of treatment; 2) Both duhat and sampaguita leaves were fair in effectiveness and partial wound healing because of essential oil component in both leaves that hasten wound healing and inflamed mucous membrane; and 3) Duhat leaves as a decoction had a shorter healing time of 9-10 days and lessened the severity of wound due to its tannin and volatile oil content. Volatile oil which is present on both leaves is a good source of antibiotic against gram negative and gram positive bacteria.
