Abstract

The pre-experimental research was the design used in this study. Respondents were chosen through a purposive sampling which was based on the criteria set. The adopted questionnaire from the study of Gaza and Nono (1997) was used in determining the effects of five-step relaxation technique as pain management. Statistical treatment was done with the use of percentage, frequency distribution and Wilcoxon-Signed Rank Test. The conclusion of the study are the following: 1) Majority of respondents 24 to 28 years old, have had high school level of education and have had their first delivery; 2) Before exposure to the five step relaxation training, majority of the respondents had more attention to pain and were difficult to distract; had marked tension, irritability and worry to pain; had marked restlessness in the skeletal muscle movement; had marked tenseness in the muscles; had normal temperature; had above normal blood pressure; had normal and greater than 100 beats per minute; and had normal and greater than 20 cycles per minute respiratory rate. After doing the five step relaxation training, majority of the respondents had little attention to pain and were less difficult to distract; had little tension, irritability or worry to pain; had very slightly restless skeletal muscle movement; had little tenseness of the muscles; had normal body temperature; had normal blood pressure; had normal pulse rate and had normal respiratory rate; 3) Before exposure to the five step relaxation training, majority of the respondents had moderate pain; had more than 40 seconds of pain; felt sore and felt pain even with minimal movement. After doing the five step relaxation training, majority of the had mild pain; had 10 second and below, 11 to 20 seconds and 21 to 30 seconds of pain; felt sore and felt pain when sitting; 4) The five-step relaxation training can decrease the physical, behavioral and psychological manifestations of pain such as attention, anxiety, skeletal muscle movement, skeletal muscle response, temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate and respiratory rate of the respondents; 5) The five-step relaxation training can decrease the degree of pain in terms intensity of pain, duration of pain and onset of pain of respondents.
