Abstract

The study utilized the non-experimental descriptive type of research. It involved the level IV students Batch 2010 of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute with a total number of 120 respondents which were randomly selected. The research instrument used in this study was a self-made survey, a checklist type questionnaire developed by the researchers for the purpose of the study. The statistical treatments used in this study to answer the specific problems were frequency distribution, percentage distribution, mean, f-test and t-test. The researchers came yup the following conclusions: 1) Majority of the respondents were female, eldest in the family, with family income of more than Php40,000 and belonging to nuclear type of family structure; 2) The level of academic performance of respondents who are influenced by their parents in choosing nursing as a course was satisfactory; 3) The level of academic performance of respondents who personally chose nursing as a course was satisfactory; 4) There was no significant difference in the level of academic performance of the respondents who were influenced by their parents to choose nursing as a course when grouped according to gender, ordinal position, socio-economic status and family structure; 5) There was no significant difference in the level of academic performance of the respondents who personally chose nursing as a course when they are grouped according to gender, ordinal position, socio-economic status and family structure; 6) There was no significant difference between academic performance of students who were merely influenced by their parents and the academic performance of those who personally chose nursing as a course.
