Abstract

The study utilized a quantitative non-experimental descriptive correlational research design. Using purposive sampling technique, a total of 150 patients were selected from those listed with heart disease in the district health centers of the city and from the referrals of the hospitals. One hundred thirty-five (135) of them were diagnosed with myocardial infarction and were considered as respondents. The study adapted two (2) research instruments: Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale that measured the level of self-esteem and Herth Hope Scale that measured the level of hope of patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction. Data was analyzed through relative frequency, percentage and mean. The study concluded that, 1) Majority of the respondents were male, belong to 20-40 years old age bracket, married, had a nuclear family structure, had reached high school, earning P10,000.00 and below, Catholic, had experienced an infarction once, and had other modes of check-up; 2) The level of self-esteem of patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction in Cavite City is high. Self-esteem is the individual’s perception of self-worth. The respondents had a positive attitude towards self and knew that they have a number of good qualities and are satisfied to oneself; 3) The level of hope of patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction in Cavite City was high; 4) There is no significant difference on the level of self-esteem of the respondents when grouped according to age, gender, civil status, educational attainment, socio-economic status, religious affiliation, and number of attacks. On the other hand, the level of self-esteem of respondents had a significant difference when grouped according to the family structure and mode of check-up; 5) There is no significant difference on the level of hope of the respondents when grouped according to age, gender, civil status, socio-economic status, religious affiliation, and number of attacks. On the other hand, the level of hope of respondents had a significant difference when grouped according to the family structure, educational attainment and mode of check-up; 6) The level of self-esteem and level of hope of patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction in Cavite City had a moderately positive linear correlation. This implies that a person diagnosed with myocardial infarction with high level of self-esteem also had high level of hope. Likewise, patients with low level of self-esteem did not hope too much about the prognosis of their condition and has a negative outlook in life.
