Effects of different clinical shifts on the academic performance as perceived by 3rd yr nursing students in De La Salle Health Sciences Institute

Abstract

In this study, a descriptive survey method of research was used. Purposive sampling was chosen. One hundred nine (109) 3rd year nursing students batch 2010 in De La Salle Health Sciences Institute were selected. The questionnaire-checklist was the major instrument used to gather data and information for the study. The following statistical treatments were used: frequency distribution, percentage and mean. The study concluded that; 1) Majority of the respondents are female and preferred to be assigned in the Operating Room; 2) Based on the findings, the respondents perceived that they performed better academically when assigned on a morning shift because they get higher grades. This was based from the criteria of academic subjects, like quizzes, recitations, requirements and major examinations; 3) There was no significant difference in the perception of the respondents on the effects of different clinical shifts on the academic performance.
